Internet Explorer 6 and older versions lack support for 'position: fixed'. I have already created a 'position: fixed' based on IE-expressions , but it is not a satisfactory solution in all cases. Requests for a CSS-only and also mode-independent solution sent me on a new search across the web, and yes, the problem is at least partially solved, and the solution documented. However, if someone wants to create crutches for lame browsers, then I'm not going to argue against it. Doing so may even be fun at times. Copy, paste and forget doesn't work for a solution like this.

The position CSS property sets how an element is positioned in a document. The top , right , bottom , and left properties determine the final location of positioned elements. The position property is specified as a single keyword chosen from the list of values below. Most of the time, absolutely positioned elements that have height and width set to auto are sized so as to fit their contents. However, non- replaced , absolutely positioned elements can be made to fill the available vertical space by specifying both top and bottom and leaving height unspecified that is, auto.

Making IE 5.5+ use position: fixed;

The first pair of values— static and relative —are closely related, and we looked into those in great detail in the last article. Absolutely positioned elements are removed entirely from the document flow. That means they have no effect at all on their parent element or on the elements that occur after them in the source code. An absolutely positioned element will therefore overlap other content unless you take action to prevent it.

IE6 and older versions doesn't support 'position: fixed' and usually makes a mess out of what it doesn't understand, so many designers avoid using this powerful, W3C-standardized, property. It's a shame, really. The viewport-size at the User end is at best an unknown factor, and the available space may be quite small. Only relatively small-sized foreground-elements should be designed to take up a fixed space in the viewport.
